Diana loves Europe

I finally got around to developing the 6 of the 7 rolls of Diana film I took on my trip to Europe last year. I am pretty happy with the result, but that is probably because I didn't know what to expect. I scanned in a few images as you can see above. I got given the Diana F+ camera as a 'thank you' present from my beautiful friends Kelly and Matt who visited me in Europe. I flew to Hungary and showed them the sights for a week or so. We had a blast discovering the secret places Budapest together and also small cities in the south of Hungary. This camera was undoubtedly the best gift I could have received, as I got it only 2 months into my 9 month trip - so there were plenty of memories and places left to record!

These small Diana prints and some digital enlargements will hopefully be exhibited here in Adelaide sometime soon. I am really hoping the show happens.

szeged

(all three photos by me, taken in the small town of Szeged, Hungary)

Now that my trip is near its end, I look back on travels and adventures I had, and aprecciate them even more in retrospect. I miss the quiet surprises of Eastern Europe, like the little old ladies selling flowers in front of the post office and the myriad of icecream flavours available for less than a 50 cents a scoop. I love the way I sometimes feel like I am really at the end of a world, like when I found myself at a delapitated, disused trainstation in rural Hungary and saw or heard no soul for hours. The iron grip of the Soviet era past is omnipresent in the homes of people, as they still grind their own coffee and make their own soda in small apartments overlooking fields of other dwarving buildings. Some still drive Trabants and distill their own palinka and deplore the politics that have sent the country down the drain some ten years ago.

double take

I´m really into quiet images these days, and I suppose I have always have been in a sense. However, of late I have found myself really finding comfort in serene images, those capturing the unnoticed moments like a teacup raised to a girl´s lips, or a cat crossing the road. Whenever I do come across such a photograph I get excited but also think to myself, "why dont people bother to take more pictures like this?" These are moments of magic, and people are missing it. And so I made a little promise to myself to document these precious, fleeting events and make the ordinary extraordinary.

Here are a few pieces from my travels around Hungary over the last month.

I arrived in Germany (again) yesterday, having flown in from Hungary after 4 weeks with family and friends and enjoyed 6 hours with my wonderful friend Karoline in Berlin, then took a 3 hour train to Kassel to my darling boyfriend. It is supernice to be back, and I haven´t felt this at home in a while. It feels great.

a climb up the Hill

I realize I don't often include men's fashion in my blog, most likely because i am a woman attracted to women's clothing and the like, however this guy really captures my attention. could it be the scraggly look of a russian revolutionary, or maybe the fiery glance of a passionate poet? Yes and Yes, I think? This is Ben Hill for Tommy Hilfiger in Attitude Mag and I think he's pretty great. I've been trying to think and I've just realized who he reminds me of - one of my favourite men in a parallel Hollywood. Gael Garcia Bernal.

Speaking of poets and revolutionaries, the above man was both and significantly so. He went by the name of Petőfi Sándor and was a played a significant part in the 1848 revolutions in Hungary.

Speaking of Attitude mag, look who is gracing the newest cover?
Guess he's literally sailing the seas of Hollywood eh?
